Wheelchair Van vs. Transfer: Choosing Once

I get this question in almost every fitting: "Should I get a van, or should I keep transferring into my car?"

It sounds like a vehicle question. It isn't. It's a chair question, and it needs to be answered before I write your order, because the two paths pull the spec in opposite directions. Get it backwards and you're living with a mismatch for five years.

Let me lay out what actually changes.

If you're going to transfer

Everything gets built around two numbers: how much the chair weighs after you break it down, and how close your seat height is to the car seat height.

Weight first. A titanium rigid frame with the wheels off and the backrest folded can come in around 11 to 14 pounds. That's a load you can hoist across your lap, over the passenger seat, and into the back seat of a sedan. The same chair in aluminum is maybe 3 pounds heavier β€” which doesn't sound like much until you do it eight times a day, every day, for a decade. I've had clients whose shoulder MRIs told the story of those 3 pounds.

So for transfer, I push hard on: rigid frame, titanium if the budget allows, quick-release axles, a folding or removable backrest, and no dead weight. No push handles if you don't need them. Fixed footplate instead of swing-away hangers. Aluminum wheels over heavy composite mags. Solid-core inserts add weight β€” I'd rather you carry a tire pump.

Seat height matters just as much. If your chair sits at 19 inches at the front and your car seat is at 21, you're transferring uphill on every entry. Tell me what you drive. A Honda Civic seat is around 20 inches; a RAV4 is closer to 24; a truck can be 30-plus. I'll set your front seat height and adjust the caster geometry so you're transferring level or slightly downhill both directions. That single decision, made at order time, is worth more than any accessory.

Also: armrest style. Full-length armrests get in the way of a lateral slide. Most of my transfer clients end up with no armrests or a short side guard.

If you're going to ride in the chair

Now weight barely matters and safety hardware matters enormously.

The chair needs to be WC19 compliant β€” crash-tested at 30 mph with a 168-pound dummy, with four securement points clearly marked with the hook symbol. Not every ultralight comes that way. On many, transit brackets are a factory option that cannot be added later. If you order without them and buy a van two years on, you're buying a new chair.

You'll also want a transit-approved headrest option, and you should plan for the vehicle's lap-shoulder belt to go over you, not over your chair's armrests. The chair's own positioning belt is not a seatbelt. I say that a lot because I see it ignored a lot.

And think about docking. If you drive from the chair or ride solo, an EZ Lock or similar docking station is far better than four manual straps β€” but it requires a bolt-on bracket under your frame, which affects ground clearance and needs to be coordinated with the frame build. Again: order time.

The honest tradeoffs

A lowered-floor minivan conversion runs roughly $25,000 to $35,000 on top of the vehicle, and used conversions age unevenly β€” the ramp and kneeling system are the expensive failure points. You need a garage with about 7 feet of clearance for side-entry, and you need van-accessible parking with an 8-foot aisle, which is genuinely scarce in older lots and city streets.

Transferring costs nothing extra and lets you drive anything. It also loads your shoulders four to twelve times a day, works badly in rain and ice, and gets harder as you get older. I have clients in their 50s who transferred beautifully for 25 years and now can't.

What I actually tell people

If you have full shoulder function, live somewhere with tight parking, and travel independently β€” transfer, and let me build you the lightest chair I can.

If you're a power chair user, use a tilt system, have significant trunk involvement, or have any shoulder pain that's trending the wrong way β€” go van, and get the transit brackets.

If you're genuinely on the fence: spec the transit brackets anyway. On most ultralights they cost a few hundred dollars and add about a pound. That's cheap insurance against a decision you might make in three years. The reverse β€” buying a van because your chair can't safely ride in one β€” is a $30,000 mistake.

And if you'll do both, tell me. A car-topper lift changes the calculus completely, but it needs a specific frame width and a hoist-compatible attachment point.

Just don't answer this question after the chair arrives.
