Reading a Wheelchair Spec Sheet Like a Pro

Every manufacturer publishes a spec sheet. Almost none of them are written to help you decide anything. They're written to make the chair look good next to the competition's chair.

After twenty years of ordering these things, here's how I read them β€” and what I look for that isn't printed on the page.

"Weight" almost never means what you think

This is the single most misleading number in the industry.

You'll see a chair advertised at 10.9 lbs. What that number lets you do is win an argument on the internet. What it doesn't tell you is whether you can lift the chair into your car β€” because that figure is the transport weight: frame only, wheels off, no cushion, no backrest, no side guards, no anti-tips, and configured at the smallest seat size the frame is offered in.

The number that actually matters is what you'll be lifting every day. A 10.9 lb transport weight typically becomes 21–25 lbs once you add a real backrest, a ROHO or foam cushion, side guards, and put a 17" seat width on it. Your wheels come off, so you're lifting maybe 15–17 lbs of frame β€” but that's still 50% more than the ad said.

What to ask: "What's the weight of this chair as I'm configuring it, with everything on it, and what's the frame weight with the wheels off?" Any decent supplier can get you both numbers. If they can't, that tells you something too.

Seat dimensions: check what's adjustable after delivery

Seat width and depth get listed as ranges β€” "14"–20" seat width, 14"–20" depth." That range is what the model offers, not what your chair will offer.

On a rigid titanium or aluminum frame, seat width is welded. Once it's built, it's built. Depth is often adjustable an inch or two by moving the backrest canes, but that changes your back position relative to the axle, which changes how the chair pushes.

This matters because bodies change. If you're newly injured, in the first year post-injury, or your weight fluctuates, being locked into a width is a real risk. I'd rather build in a deliberate half-inch than have a client outgrow a $6,000 chair in eighteen months.

Seat height: two numbers, and the difference is the whole chair

Spec sheets list front seat-to-floor height and rear seat-to-floor height. The gap between them is your seat slope (sometimes called dump).

A 19" front / 17" rear setup gives you 2" of dump. That keeps you planted in the chair, improves trunk stability, and makes the chair feel secure over curbs and uneven ground. The tradeoff: it's harder to get out of, harder to transfer from, and it puts more pressure on your sit bones β€” which matters if you have any pressure injury history.

A 1" dump or a flat seat transfers easier and loads the ischial tuberosities less aggressively, but you'll feel less stable and you'll work harder to stay upright.

There's no right answer. There's only your answer, and it depends on trunk control, transfer method, and skin history.

The number that isn't on the sheet: axle position

Center of gravity β€” how far forward your rear axle sits relative to your shoulders β€” determines more about how the chair rides than any published spec. Move the axle forward and the chair turns easier, rolls with less effort, and casters lighten up. Move it too far forward and you tip backward reaching for a cabinet.

Spec sheets list an adjustment range in inches (often 2"–3" of fore/aft travel). What you want to know is where you'll actually sit in that range, and whether the chair still has adjustment left in both directions when you're set up. A chair maxed out at one end of its range on delivery day has nowhere to go when your strength or technique changes.

Camber, casters, and caster flutter

Camber (usually 0Β°, 3Β°, or 6Β°) angles the wheels out at the bottom. Three degrees gives you a slightly wider, more stable base and a more natural push stroke. Six degrees turns beautifully and is common in sport chairs β€” but it widens your overall chair by roughly 2" at floor level, which is real when you're getting through a 30" bathroom door.

Caster size: 4" casters are quick and light but stop dead in gravel and sidewalk cracks. 5" or 6" roll over more but add flutter at speed and a little weight. If you're mostly indoors on hard floors, small. Mixed outdoor terrain, go bigger.

Weight capacity and warranty language

Weight capacity is usually 250 or 265 lbs standard, with heavy-duty options. Note that this figure includes you plus everything you carry β€” backpack, laptop, groceries. Exceeding it voids the frame warranty.

On warranties: look for the split. Most ultralight chairs carry a lifetime frame warranty and a much shorter one β€” often 1 to 3 years β€” on moving parts, upholstery, and casters. "Lifetime warranty" on the front page means the welded frame only, and it's usually lifetime of the original user, non-transferable.

The three questions I'd ask about any chair

  1. What does this weigh as I'm ordering it, fully assembled?
  2. What can be changed after delivery without a new frame?
  3. Where will my axle sit in the adjustment range, and how much room is left on each side?

A good supplier answers all three without hedging. If you get vague answers, the problem isn't the chair.
