Tariffs and Wheelchair Prices: What to Expect

Clients have been asking me some version of the same question all year: "Is my next chair going to cost more because of tariffs?"

Honest answer: probably yes, but not in the way most people assume, and not evenly across the chair. Let me walk you through where the money actually moves.

Your chair is not made in one place

Even a chair welded in Wisconsin or Washington State is a global assembly. Here's roughly how a typical rigid ultralight breaks down:

  • Frame tubing. Titanium tube is overwhelmingly milled overseas β€” a lot of it in Asia. Aerospace-grade 6061/7005 aluminum is more often domestic, but not always.
  • Bearings. Almost universally imported. Nobody's making sealed cartridge bearings for caster forks in Ohio.
  • Tires and tubes. Schwalbe, Kenda, Primo β€” manufactured in Germany, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia.
  • Wheels. Carbon and composite spoke wheels involve overseas layup even when final assembly is domestic.
  • Cushions and backs. This is the most domestic part of your chair. ROHO in Illinois, Ride Designs in Colorado, Varilite in Seattle, Supracor in California. Foam and air cells are largely US-sourced.
  • Fasteners, hardware, quick-release axles. Mixed, heavily imported.

So when tariffs hit, they hit unevenly. The frame and the small metal bits take the biggest percentage increase. Your cushion barely moves.

Three different tariff mechanisms, three different effects

This matters because they don't stack the way people think.

Steel and aluminum tariffs (Section 232) apply to the metal content value, and the derivative-product lists have expanded to catch more finished goods. If a $200 aluminum component has $60 of metal content, the tariff applies to that $60 β€” not the $200.

China-specific tariffs (Section 301) hit component categories hard β€” bearings, hardware, tubing, tires.

Broad country-level tariffs are the volatile ones. They change with little notice, which is why manufacturers have gotten cagey about honoring quotes.

Realistically, on a $6,500 configured titanium rigid chair, I'd expect the manufacturer's cost pressure to translate to somewhere in the $250–$700 range at retail, depending on how much titanium and imported hardware is in the build. Not catastrophic. Not nothing.

Where it hurts more is the accessory shelf. A pair of Frog Legs suspension forks, a set of carbon wheels, a spare set of casters β€” those are smaller-margin items where suppliers pass costs straight through.

The part nobody talks about: insurance doesn't adjust

This is the real story.

Medicare's fee schedule for K0005 ultralightweight manual wheelchairs and the associated accessory codes gets adjusted annually by a consumer price index formula. It does not get adjusted because titanium tubing went up 18 percent. Medicaid plans and most commercial payers anchor to those same numbers.

So when costs rise and allowables don't, the supplier absorbs it β€” until they can't. Then what actually happens is:

  • Suppliers quietly stop offering certain brands or configurations that no longer clear their margin
  • "That option isn't available through insurance" becomes a more common sentence
  • Lead times stretch because dealers stop stocking and start ordering only against paid work
  • More items get pushed to patient responsibility as upgrades

You may never see a bigger number on your invoice. You'll see a shorter menu instead. That's the tariff effect that actually costs you a good chair.

What I'd actually do about it

Ask whether your quote is honored at order date or ship date. This is a genuine contractual difference between manufacturers and it is the single most useful question you can ask right now. On a 10–14 week build, ship-date pricing means you're accepting an unknown number.

If you're inside 12 months of your replacement window, start now. The paperwork alone β€” evaluation, letter of medical necessity, prior auth β€” takes 8 to 16 weeks before anything gets built. Starting early costs you nothing and can save you a price revision.

Buy consumables ahead, not the chair. Don't panic-buy a wheelchair. Do buy a spare set of casters, tires, tubes, and caster bearings while pricing is known. That's maybe $200–$400 that will hold its value and save you a scramble.

Protect the frame, cut elsewhere. If you need to save $500, take it out of the wheels or the backrest β€” both are replaceable later. Do not downgrade frame material, axle position adjustability, or seat dimensions. Those are permanent.

Verify your build sheet before it ships. Component substitution happens when supply gets tight. Get the configuration document, read every line, and confirm the axle plate, caster size, and back angle match what you specified.

Don't assume domestic means cheaper. A Canadian-built Motion Composites frame moving under USMCA may land better than a US-assembled chair full of tariffed imported tube. Compare actual quotes, not flags.

One more thing: tariff policy moves faster than anyone's ordering cycle. Anything I tell you about specific rates has a shelf life. The structural advice β€” order early, lock your price, protect the frame β€” holds regardless.
