Breezy Ultra 4 Discontinued: Try the Helio A6
If you've tried to reorder a Breezy Ultra 4 recently and your supplier came back with "no longer available," you're not imagining it. Sunrise Medical has been winding down the Breezy line in North America, and the Ultra 4 is one of the casualties. Parts availability for existing chairs usually continues for a while after a model is discontinued, but new orders are the problem β and if you've been in the same chair for six years and it's finally worn out, that's a real problem.
Before you order anything, ask your supplier to confirm in writing what's still available and what's genuinely gone. Discontinuation timelines vary by region and sometimes by configuration, and I've seen suppliers declare a chair dead when only one option on it was dropped.
What the Ultra 4 actually was
It helps to be honest about what you're replacing. The Breezy Ultra 4 was a cross-brace folding chair, aluminum frame, roughly 33 pounds depending on configuration, with a dual-axle bracket that let you make one modest change to seat-to-floor height and center of gravity. It sat at the value end of the lightweight category, and it was priced accordingly. It was a reliable, unglamorous chair that a lot of people used full-time because it was what they could get hold of.
What it wasn't: adjustable in any meaningful way. You couldn't move the rear axle forward in small increments to make the chair easier to push. You couldn't change the back angle much. The frame flexed, which meant some of every push stroke went into the chair instead of into the floor. For a part-time user, none of that matters. For someone propelling eight hours a day, it matters a great deal β and it's the main reason I don't think the right answer is to find the nearest 33-pound folder and call it even.
The closest like-for-like replacement: Drive Medical Viper Plus GT
If what you want is the same chair with a different badge, the honest answer is the Drive Medical Viper Plus GT. It's the nearest thing on the market to the Ultra 4: cross-brace aluminum folder, similar weight in the low-to-mid 30s, a dual-axle bracket for one step of seat height and center-of-gravity change, adjustable-height back and armrests, and a price in the same value bracket. Suppliers stock it in standard widths, it ships quickly, and nobody has to specify anything. If your chair is a spare, a travel chair, or something a caregiver pushes for an hour at a time, that's a perfectly defensible order and I won't talk you out of it.
But if you were in the Ultra 4 full-time, understand what you're signing up for. The Viper Plus GT is the same compromise you've already been living with for six years: the same ten pounds of extra frame to lift into the car, the same two axle positions, the same flex in the cross brace eating part of every push. Replacing a discontinued value folder with another value folder means you spend money and change nothing. That's the choice worth thinking about before you sign.
Why the Helio A6 is a sensible step up
The Motion Composites Helio A6 is a folding aluminum ultralight β same basic architecture as the Ultra 4 and the Viper, cross brace and all, so it fits the same cars, the same closets, the same routines. Where it differs:
Weight. Configured comparably, the A6 typically lands in the low-to-mid 20s in pounds, and its transport weight (wheels off, footrests off) can drop under 20. That's ten-plus pounds off what you were lifting into a car, and ten-plus pounds off what the Viper would have you lifting. If you self-transfer and load your own chair, this is the single biggest quality-of-life change.
A real axle plate. The A6 has a multi-position rear axle assembly that lets you adjust center of gravity in small increments, plus rear seat-to-floor height and camber options. This is the difference between a chair that fits and a chair you compensate for. Moving the axle forward reduces rolling resistance at the front casters and shortens your push stroke; moving it back adds stability. On the Ultra 4 β and on the Viper Plus GT β you got two positions and a shrug.
Frame stiffness. A folding chair will never be as efficient as a rigid one, but the A6 is noticeably stiffer than a value-priced folder. Less energy lost to flex means less shoulder wear over years, which is the injury that ends independence for a lot of long-term manual users.
Fit, not sizes. The Viper comes in catalog widths and depths; the A6 is built to your measurements, with your seat angle, your back height, your caster size. Over a full-time day, the difference between "close enough" and "correct" shows up in your shoulders, your posture, and how far you're willing to go.
Put plainly: the Viper Plus GT matches the Ultra 4. The Helio A6 beats it β lighter, stiffer, adjustable, and measured to you β on every axis that matters to someone who pushes for a living.
The honest tradeoffs
Cost. The A6 is a genuine ultralightweight, and it's priced like one β meaningfully more than the Ultra 4 ever was, and well above a Viper. What you're buying is weight savings and adjustability, and the value of those depends entirely on how much you push. If you're in the chair six or eight hours a day and lifting it in and out of a car, the money buys you shoulders that still work in ten years. If the chair sits by the door for occasional outings, be honest with yourself about whether you need it.
Configuration is now your responsibility. The Ultra 4 came in a handful of widths and you picked one. The A6 has to be specified: seat width and depth, front and rear seat-to-floor height, back angle and height, camber, caster size, footrest style. Order it wrong and you'll have a very expensive chair that fits worse than the one it replaced.
If a folder isn't actually required, consider a rigid frame. Many people order folding chairs out of habit. If you transfer into a car and put the frame on the passenger seat, a rigid ultralight (the Helio A7, for example) will be lighter and more efficient still. Folding earns its keep when you need to stow the chair upright in a small space, when a caregiver loads it into a trunk, or when accessible vans and lifts are part of your routine.
Before your old chair goes in the dumpster
Measure it. Seat width between the armrests at the widest point of your hips. Seat depth from back canes to the back of your knee, minus about two inches. Front and rear seat-to-floor heights measured to the top of the finished cushion, because the cushion is part of your seat height. Back height from the seat surface. Note where the rear axle sits relative to the back canes, and note whether you've been fighting the chair β tipping back, straining to reach the wheels, casters that shimmy. Those complaints are the specification for the new chair.
A discontinued model is a nuisance. It's also the first chance in years to fix the fit you've been working around.
